Sight Campaigns
Aim: To eradicate unnecessary blindness globally
Ever since 1921 when they were challenged by Helen Keller to become 'knights of the blind' members of Lions Clubs International have upheld an unmatched involvement in working for causes associated with blind and sight impaired people throughout the world.
In over 80 years since this challenge Lions can claim many successes in sight related initiatives including the introduction of 'the white walking stick/cane' for blind people. In the last two years Lions Worldwide have raised over $220 million in their quest to eradicate unnecessary blindness globally.
Frimley and Camberley Lions Club have supported this programme anually where a typical donation of £250 will fund an Eye clinic in India and allow some 20 patients to have operations and their sight restored and many others treated to prevent blindness.
Lions Lloyd and John have been collecting old spectacles from Specsavers Opticians in Farnborough and Camberley, John Hardman & Lightwater Opticians for delivery to the Apludaram Centre, Chichester for many years now. Here Lion Lloyd is seen delivering another batch of over 1000 glasses, all sorted and boxed ready for dispatch to France. There is a team of Chichester Lions on duty every Tuesday who sort, check and box before shipping abroad.
